Bluemoon College has been private investigator training for over 30 years. Firstly, we delivered private investigator training for our own investigators. We also train our franchisee’s as well. Over the years, outside agencies and trade associations approached us about private investigator training. Hence, Bluemoon College was born and became its own entity.
What does modern private investigator training look like?
We have written several topics in the past with respect to licensing. The debate over private investigator training will continue. Meanwhile it is still at the forefront of potential regulation discussions. How do you know if a PI is competent? What is the minimum level education and knowledge required to act as a private investigator in the UK likely to be?

Level 3 in Private Investigation Training
The actual award title is the Level 3 Award in Professional Investigation. Bluemoon College offer this as an online and a study from home course. It does not cover the practical side of investigations. It covers the legal aspects and laws that surround professional investigation.
There are two units:-
Unit 1: Principles of Planning and Reporting Investigations
Unit 2: Principles of Gathering and Using Information for Investigations
The legal aspects and laws that a professional PI needs to comply with are many. In fact, oo numerous to mention here, but include, for example:-
Human Rights Act
RIPA 2000
Data Protection Act 1998 and 2018
Protection from Harassment Act 1997
Sexual Offences Act 2003
Consequently to be a professional PI you must make sure you have enough private investigator training. You must that cover these topics and more to ensure you act in a safe and legal way.

Assessment and Certification
In conclusion, anybody can find some information online. Then they can claim they have had some private investigation training. In addition, you don’t even have to do any training to open a PI Agency. If licensing does come into effect, the Level 3 Award is seen as the standard for operators. The SIA (Security Industry Authority) are the most likely licensing body at this time.
After that the awarding body will issue your certificate for you. As a result, it proves you have received enough private investigator training. Consequently, it can be used for job seekers. And to submit to the SIA as proof of learning and core learning.
